Friends forever

Everybody knows the importance of vitamins in the daily diet, right ? Vitamins both fat soluble (vitamin A, D, E, K) and water soluble (vitamin B complex and C) are very essential to maintain good and healthy life. 

But I want to talk  in this space about another equally important vitamin called 'vitamin F' ! Puzzled....? You have never heard about such a vitamin, isn't it ? 

Anyways let me tell you about it, this vitamin 'F' stands for 'friends'. Yes, our friends, friends of all sorts and characters, good friends, best friends, so..so friends, dear friends, all time friends, understanding friends, helping friends, real friends, friend in need friends, friends in deed friends, etc. etc. You might also have heard of the very popular Hindi jingle in TV commercials going like this "Kyonki har ek friend jaroori hota hain" this means "because every friend is important".

According to some, friends are like anti-depressants, while according to others they are the best stress - busters available, they are the shoulders to cry on when in problems, or they are the bunch to laugh out loud with, every small and big matter can be shared with them, friends never compare our qualities with others, we feel the best when we are with them, friends can bring out our hidden talents, polish them and encourage us to perform better, the feeling of warmth and cosyness which a friend can spread is truly wonderful, it has to be really experienced to know what it feels to have a true friend. 

Now, coming to the important point : To get a friend like that you yourself have to first become such type of a friend. Another important thing : Age is not a matter of concern for friendship, when the wavelength match you are friends, yes a mother and son/daughter, father and son/daughter, teacher and student, persons you might meet the very first time, grandparents and grandchildren, husband and wife, playground friends, campus friends, school friends, etc. etc. all are a long list of would be friends.   

Enjoy and keep in touch with your friends, never lose contact with them through the ups and downs of life.

My Interview to SIAS Blog


Dr. Preetha Badi is the former Head of the Department of Biochemistry at SAFI Institute of Advanced Study. She also heads the Women’s Wing of the Central government’s Open Source Drug Discovery project. As she leaves SIAS campus, NIMMI BASKARAN engages her in a lengthy conversation for Campus Now blog. Excerpts:

You did your graduation and masters from Devi Ahilya University, Indore, Madhya Pradesh. What are the differences when one compares the higher education sector in Kerala with that of other states?
Definitely there is a big difference; higher education in Kerala is lagging far behind as compared to other states. I completed B.Sc (Microbiology) and then M.Sc (Biochemistry) in 1998, so these subjects were there much before than they were even introduced here. Professors there were very well-versed in their respective subjects, stress was more on gaining in-depth knowledge, understanding the basics not cramming to just pass exams, I remember their teaching methodology even now. Making the students understand the subject is of utmost importance, this makes them fall in love with the subject and then the rest they will themselves do.
What may be the reason behind the lack of such a competent higher educational atmosphere in Kerala?
One main fault I have found is in the basic education itself, it’s incomplete and incompetent. If basics are fuzzy, it will make things worse when you are coming to degree level, where learning is more advanced. Here, the students just see the course as something to pass the examination, not their fault, they are taught like that. In Kerala, what I have heard is only the government school teachers impart proper basic education, that is teach the fundamentals. Other schools are just places of fierce competition to score the best grades.
Do you mean to say that the English medium schools in Kerala are useless?
Not entirely, as English medium schools are there in the government sector too. Making the students get the basics is very important. As I am not educated here I don’t know what the actual situation really is. If you see the past records of competitive exams, students from Malayalam medium and from government schools are more in number. It means the problem is not in the medium but in the teaching methods.
You have been one of the best teachers this campus has ever seen, according to scores of students and your colleagues. Did your teaching career start in SIAS?
No. While I was doing my Ph.D, I taught Plus Two students in Queens College, Indore (M.P.), there I used to teach Biotechnology. Later, I worked in Calicut SDS Memorial Home Science College for one year, as a Food Biochemistry lecturer. Thereafter, I joined SIAS on June 4, 2008. It has been more than three and half years, now.
What made you to select SIAS?
It’s not a question of selection, the first five years after marriage was completely devoted to kids, at that time my priority was looking after my family, I believe unless you are a good mother you can never be a good teacher. The next five years were spent in balancing family and pursuing doctorate.  I completed my Ph.D in 2007, the kids were grown up and the time was apt for a job, applied in SAFI in response to the advertisement in 2008 and got the job.That’s it.
You are an active leader of the Open Source Drug Discovery (OSDD) project of the Central government. The current research, as far as I know, is to discover drugs for Tuberculosis. Is the mission going to be successful soon? Are you optimistic or skeptical?
Yes, I want to be optimistic about it because nobody except OSDD is at least trying to find a cure for tuberculosis. I believe its possible to find a drug as the work has started from the basic genomics level and the direction of the research is right. There has to be a wonder drug for TB which the community will discover sooner or later. I’m not skeptical at this point of time.
However, the public, by and large, seems to be quite unaware of the OSDD mission. How can we spread awareness among the people?
By organizing seminars, symposiums, classes etc. When I initially joined OSDD, we went in and around Calicut conducting seminars at colleges like Devakiyamma College, Farook College etc. Sri Buddha College, Alappuzha is also involved in OSDD projects. Under the auspices of CSIR, large number of seminars have been organised all around Kerala and also around the country. I think people are more aware about this dreaded disease now than in the past.
Is it just an urban project? Are such studies being conducted in rural area, too?
Many of the participants working here are from rural area. When in future the drug is developed it will be more beneficial and affordable to the poor people as it will be free from Intellectual Property Rights etc. (as developed by open community).
Is OSDD working on any other lethal diseases apart from TB?
Cancer has been talked about. But I am not sure. Prime priority is to complete the TB project. They are planning to find drugs for malaria too.  Other details are awaited.
There are other forms of treatments, like Pranic healing, which offer complete cure of diseases. How far they are true? What is your assessment, as a scientist?
It’s totally an individualistic approach. I and my family take homeopathic medicines; allopathy from my view is for emergency purposes. I believe allopathic drugs are harmful; I am yet to see a medicine which is free of side effects. I feel homeopathy is the best as it is a type of holistic medicine which is not based on treating the disease in the person but treating the person in disease. I have no in-depth idea about the effect of other forms you mentioned. If it works for certain people then it’s fine for them. Whatever the form of treatment, your belief and faith in that is more important.
You say allopathy is harmful. But OSDD works towards an allopathic solution to TB, right?
Yes, because, till now no other stream has complete cure for TB. The current four medicines available for TB have severe side effects. So, we are looking to discover a drug which is free of toxic side effects, micro quantities would be enough and that which does not have to be consumed for a long duration favoring patient compliance.
What is your concept about popular science writing? People today feel it a bit absurd to read a scientific journal?
What you have said is true. When I see a scientific journal and a general article I prefer reading the general article. Scientific journal becomes boring to the common readers because of the technical terminologies. But for those who are from the field this is a necessity. Structure and profile of scientific writing need to be changed before taking it to common man. Instead of details it can be limited to the crux and result of the work, which will be more informative to the common reader.
Kerala is a state that claims 100% literacy. What do you think of the work culture of Keralites?
I came to Kerala after my marriage and now I am more so a permanent resident here. It seems Keralites’ attitude is impossible to change. Even after so many years of Independence, this is one state where we have frequentbandhshartals and strikes. We don’t have a work culture to boast of, but the same people when they go outside Kerala give their 100%. Strange it seems but that is what I saw at OSDD, too.
We have propagated OSDD Women Scientist Forum, you can work even from home, with a computer and internet connection it’s a virtual laboratory. But nobody is taking serious interest. At other places, people would have jumped at such opportunities, given that it is an online job. Even though we have 100% literacy, basic knowledge and attitude is seriously lacking.
One of the problems with the college education in Kerala, perhaps, is the issue of poor communication skills in English.
We preach but we do not practice. Students imitate teachers, their role models but what if the teachers are not up to the mark? Teachers should have good command over the language and the confidence to speak in front of an audience. We have to teach and guide the students to strengthen their vocabulary and continuously communicate with them in English and show them its importance. Those who are genuinely interested in building a career should develop their English-speaking skills.
What is your proposal of programmes to be initiated in SIAS?
SIAS lacks proper research base. There is too much talk and emphasis on research work but getting it translated into real work at the ground level is too slow. Research should be there in every department and it should be properly co-ordinated. The basic problems should be solved prima facie. We lost a lot of time because of such basic problems, that too at a very crucial juncture. The future of any Institute lies in research. I and Dr Sheeba have completed a book chapter (for an invited review journal) of about 50 pages on anti-tubercular phyto- molecules. But, it seems to have no significance; here people do not understand what scientific research is. I honestly feel the absence of a decision-making authority with a scientific background, for the speedy progress of R.
Any institute is known by the faculty it has. Emphasis should be on getting good teachers and once you get them they should be retained. Investment should not only be in infrastructure and consumables but also on hiring good faculties preferably with a Ph.D background, but it should be noted that having a NET or Ph.D is also not an absolute indicator of  his / her being a good teacher.
What is your advice to your students?
Learn to love your subject, then passing exams won’t be a problem. Be fully committed and dedicated to your studies and work. Develop all round personality, master languages as well as develop good command over English. Give importance to research. Don’t be limited by the boundary of departments, feel free to know and understand inter-departmental subjects and activities. Always talk looking into the eyes of the person, this builds self-confidence and reflects inner truth, set a goal - work towards it.
I can go on and on, all my students are very dear to me, I know they will be in touch with me through out so the remaining advices I can dispense at that time, for time being ‘All the best and do good’.
So, why did you decide to leave SIAS?
The main reason for leaving SIAS is travelling problems: changing three buses, four hours of daily travelling, coupled with teaching and round the clock research work. It is too exhaustive and discouraging because these very efforts are not getting translated into its real worth. This made me review my priorities. My three years of teaching here has shown me that students are weak in their basics. I have plans to start  my own study center. My entire focus is on imparting basic knowledge. The aim is now contributing to the society. I feel my knowledge and exposure could be utilized for the development of the student community with whom I can so effortlessly relate, at the same time, I can also assist my husband in script writing, to be connected to creative work is rewarding in itself.
I learnt that your husband is a script writer. How long he has been working in the film industry?
My husband, Mr. Anil Kunhappan, has worked as an assistant director in five films. Now he is working on his own scriptHe is a B.E Mechanical Engineer from BITS, Bhilai, has set up his own company and was concentrating on business, but his underlying passion has always been movies. He always wanted to follow his passion but when you have family to take care of, it’s a risky decision to make but now the choice is made. We love watching movies of all languages. That gives a lot of exposure. I always tell my students that exposure is important. Come out of the  well called Kerala and see the world, its one life we all get.

Facing the odds

It has been a long time since I blogged the last time, the past week was spent in the hospital nursing my son after a surgery, now that he has recovered I am back to spend some time with my dear ones.

Life is not the same always and it is actually good in a way that it changes form day to day otherwise it would have been a monotonous life. But the real test is to go through the experience and come out with flying colors. The test may be long and arduous at times and you may feel frustrated but believing that the omnipresent and omnipotent will always be there by your side can help you overcome any Herculean task. Because you all know the saying "God helps those who helps themselves". So the first step has to be taken by you in the face of odds which will invariably come up in the way of life, never give up, smile even in the face of problems and you will emerge winners.

Every happiness is followed by a sorrow and vice versa, there is always light at the end of a tunnel, believe and see the difference. Develop a positive, optimistic attitude and life becomes very different, enjoyable, cheerful and you can even spread the euphoria to all those who come in contact with you, they can also experience the positive vibes in you and slowly the entire world becomes a paradise of peace and harmony.

So, smile at the odds............................

Develop scientific knowledge


"In science, impossible does not exist. Inventions and discoveries are the products of constant endeavour by creative minds, envisioning ever-new outcomes. With vivid imagination and consistent effort, the forces of the universe can be made to work for an inspired mind. How do we fire up the minds of India's youth who are the foundation for cutting edge research and usher in a renaissance in Indian science?


We need a new generation of creative scientists. For that, we need an environment for research and challenging missions. Above all, academic institutions must have well-equipped laboratories and professors who have the proven capacity to attract youth to science. I have noticed that Indian universities lack a research culture. I believe where there is good research, good teaching is possible; where there is good teaching, good research emanates. Hence, I visualise our universities transforming into research-cum-teaching hubs. This calls for the presence of a number of renowned research professors on campus to attract bright students. Such a research environment will provide credibility to university departments and, in turn, bring in funding by industry and R&D laboratories for research programmes and projects.

The present trend among young people after Class XII is to take up engineering, medicine or management courses because of an assurance of employment. To attract the best minds to science research at the M.Sc and doctoral programmes, it is essential that an exclusive science cadre is introduced to facilitate a career in well known scientific laboratories and universities."



The above three paragraphs are excerpts from our former President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Sir's write-up "Time to ignite young minds". This is exactly what I have tried to emulate and follow and to all my students I would like to say that 'knowledge is power' and if you find one who can provide you the power and satisfy your hunger for knowledge, follow him/her to develop yourself as well as many others like you. Get your basics right and then building advanced knowledge on it will be a lot more easier. Science is really going to be the 'in thing' in the years to come, mold and develop yourself accordingly to be the torch bearers of scientific revolution.

Life and Happiness

Shakespeare said: I always feel happy, you know why ? Because I don't expect anything from anyone, expectations always hurt... life is short... so love your life.. be happy... and keep smiling... before you speak..  listen, before you write... think, before you spend... earn, before you pray... forgive, before you hurt... feel, before you hate... love, before you quit... try, and before you die... live.


All these are the guidelines to live and lead a happy life even in the face of problems and troubles. There is not a single soul on this planet who has never experienced sadness and faced hurdles in life. Its part and parcel of the game called life and so the best solution, the all effective panacea is to have a positive, optimistic attitude and go very easy on yourself and on the whole business of life. 


I can say this all because this is precisely what I have experienced over the past two weeks since I have quit my job. Things bound to happen will happen, you can never stop it from happening however hard you try by replaying the events in your mind over and again, what matters is the way in which you deal with the problems whether it is of medical, legal or any other nature. 


When you say "I can", and expect success, you fill yourself with confidence and happiness.


Positive thinking evokes more energy, more initiative and more happiness.


Fill your mind with light, happiness, hope, feelings of security and strength, and soon your life will reflect these qualities.

Who is a teacher ?

Yesterday, a news from one of my former students really disturbed me. The issue brought forth a serious debate in my mind as to what is the real duty of a teacher ? Is it to teach the prescribed syllabus and subjects to the students so that they perform well in the exams and secure ranks for the sake of their own and for the sake of their institute / college ? Or is it to impart knowledge in such a way that the student falls in love with the subject and becomes deeply involved in the same and goes on to do something wonderful or achieve something remarkable in his area of study ?

Or is it something totally different like molding the student in such a way that he/she is totally prepared to step into the vast open arena called life with brimming self -confidence and the ability to make correct decisions and judgement ?

We have to analyse the possibilities and identify the real role and duty of the teachers and heads of the institutions in the life of students. Its a huge responsibility and we should be able to do justice to the same otherwise the whole concept of being a teacher is defeated and the nobility of the divine profession is undermined.

Perspective to life

Let me share with you all an interesting piece of mathematics, the guy who would have come up with this, has to be a really an 'out of the box thinker' !!

Ok, first let us create a code : If A - Z is equal to 1 - 26 that is if A = 1, B = 2, C = 3 and so on till Y = 25, Z = 26    Adding the numbers corresponding to the letters in the word, let us see what makes our life 100%.

Is it HARD WORK (8+1+18+4+23+15+18+11) Total = 98%.........    Almost close but not 100%
Then KNOWLEDGE = 96%...........   No
LOVE = 54%
LUCK = 47%

We all thought these were most important, then what is it ?

Is it MONEY = 72%...........  No
LEADERSHIP = 89%  ........ Still No

Now look here ATTITUDE (1+20+20+9+20+21+4+5) = 100%

Yes, it is the attitude towards life and work that makes our life 100%

Have a positive... optimistic attitude and you will be enjoying every moment of your beautiful life given to you for a limited period of time on this earth. Yes, we all have an expiry date, isn't it ? So... come on cheer up, be the sunshine and brighten everybody's life !!

Tribute to Steve Jobs - Part 2


I have always told my students to set a goal in life, if the goal is set God will will lead you there, of course you will have to work with all your heart but you can be pretty sure that one day you will definitely reach your goal. Keeping this in perspective I want to share another of Steve Jobs story with you. Read on.. see the truth!

Steve Jobs - "My second story is about love and loss".

"I was lucky — I found what I loved to do early in life. Woz and I started Apple in my parents garage when I was 20. We worked hard, and in 10 years Apple had grown from just the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion company with over 4000 employees. We had just released our finest creation — the Macintosh — a year earlier, and I had just turned 30. And then I got fired. How can you get fired from a company you started? Well, as Apple grew we hired someone who I thought was very talented to run the company with me, and for the first year or so things went well. But then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out. When we did, our Board of Directors sided with him. So at 30 I was out. And very publicly out. What had been the focus of my entire adult life was gone, and it was devastating.

I really didn't know what to do for a few months. I felt that I had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - I was a very public failure, and I even thought about running away from the valley. But something slowly began to dawn on me — I still loved what I did. The turn of events at Apple had not changed that one bit. I had been rejected, but I was still in love. And so I decided to start over.

I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.

During the next five years, I started a company named NeXT, another company named Pixar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would become my wife. Pixar went on to create the world's first computer animated feature film, Toy Story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world. In a remarkable turn of events, Apple bought NeXT, I returned to Apple, and the technology we developed at NeXT is at the heart of Apple's current renaissance. And Laurene and I have a wonderful family together.

I'm pretty sure none of this would have happened if I hadn't been fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine, but I guess the patient needed it. Sometimes life hits you in the head with a brick. Don't lose faith. I'm convinced that the only thing that kept me going was that I loved what I did. You've got to find what you love. And that is as true for your work as it is for your lovers. Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it. And, like any great relationship, it just gets better and better as the years roll on. So keep looking until you find it. Don't settle."

Yes my dears, life is really simple, it is we who complicate it, be true to yourself and follow your heart, you will be on the right track.

A tribute to Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs, the co-founder of Apple died last Wednesday, a great visionary, a creative genius and a remarkable human being.

This is one of the stories from a prepared text of the Commencement address delivered by Steve Jobs, on June 12, 2005 which I find very true and inspiring. I want to share the excerpts with all of you. 


Steve Jobs - When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.

Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure - these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. .


Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.


So true, isn't it ? We all know this but what we do is exactly the opposite, just spending and wasting the precious little time we have got, worrying over silly things instead of enjoying and living every moment to its fullest.


Be happy, follow your heart, listen to others but do what your conscience says.

Teacher Student Relationship

I want to share a story with you all about the role of a teacher in student's life (Excerpt from Prakash Iyer's advice).


Story.... of an imaginary conversation between a pencil and an eraser


“I am sorry,” said the pencil to the eraser. “Whatever for?” asked the eraser “I am sorry because you get hurt because of me,” continued the pencil. “Every time I make a mistake, you are there to erase it. And every time you make one of my mistakes vanish, you lose a bit of yourself. You become smaller and smaller. And a bit dirty too.”

“You shouldn’t really worry,” responded the eraser.
“I was meant to help you whenever you made a mistake, and I am happy doing my job. And I know one day I’ll be gone and you will find someone else to do my job. While I am around, I take pride in knowing I did my bit to help erase your mistakes. Keep writing. ”

‘Erasers’ in our lives

If you think about it, you’ll probably recognize that our teachers were the erasers in our lives. We were the pencils, sharp, and colourful. And every time we made a mistake, the teachers were there to correct us. They gave a bit of themselves – so that we could emerge looking just a bit better.

As we moved from school to college and then to work, we found new teachers. Let us thank all those teachers who happily got a little dirtier to keep us clean, who didn’t mind losing a bit of themselves to make our work error-free. And who were happy to fade away and watch our work with pride as we moved on to newer worlds, and newer teachers. The pencils might get all the glory, but it’s the erasers who made it all possible.

The word Brainsmiths have always been with me since my college days, I have thought about it a lot and it makes sense to me that like a blacksmith or an iron-smith who molds beautiful furniture out of iron we teachers are responsible for molding the students into responsible citizens with all round personality and deep embedded values. So, teachers are in fact Brainsmiths, a very beautiful word with complete meaning in itself.

We all know children imitate their parents, their elders. When they come out of their house and move into schools and colleges teachers are the ones who naturally become their role models. So, how can teachers become good role models to their students ?

Compassion brought contentment

The past few weeks have unfolded a great number of events in my life as a teacher, I am humbled by the response which has been generated by the simple act of being compassionate and giving trust and love sans any barriers of discrimination. This blog is a testimony to all my students and colleagues for affirming my faith in the age old values of love, equality, compassion, trust, giving confidence, seeing only good in all, being a moral and emotional support to one and all.

This blog is also a way of staying in touch with my dear students and colleagues whom I miss a lot, let this be a medium of sharing my views and listening to yours. Nurturing relationship is living life to its fullest and this is precisely what I intend to do by publishing this blog.

I owe sincere thanks form the bottom of my heart to all of you for making these three and a half years a special and cherished achievement. I feel blessed to have been given the chance to come in contact with you all and will treasure these very memories till the last breath of my life.
